What happened Dad?

Things I remember about my Dad, are very little and mostly sad
Never happy being home, always out, we learned how to get along
Of the things I can recall, most aren't happy, no not at all
Memories of fights and tears, although it's faded over the years
I don't think about it very often, most of it I've forgotten now
I remember when we went away, we all cried, I won't forget that day
Mum said she couldn't take no more, I didn't understand, I need to learn more
What happened Dad, where did it all go wrong
I know you would have liked another chance, to show you're a better man
I don't think about it very much but I know I could have done with a Dad's touch
I've tried to work out how I feel, I don't feel much at all, It's so surreal
Now with four boys of my own, I've made mistakes but I've been here to watch them grow
You've heard that proverb what's that one? Sins of the father are visited upon the son
Dad was a product of his time, and thankfully I'm one of mine
I don't think about it very often, most of it I've forgotten now
